### Course Overview

Grade 6 Math Plus bridges the gap between elementary and middle school, differentiating the instruction so that struggling students are given the help and knowledge they need to master the concepts, while advanced students are able to accelerate at their own pace. 6th Grade Math course, taught by Theresa Clark.

### Course Objectives & Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of Acellus Grade 6 Math, students will be able to: find greatest common factors, least common multiple; compare using multiplication; write rations three ways; simplify rations; find unit rates; define proportions; use proportional relationships and divisibility rules; change decimals to fractions and change fractions to decimals by finding equivalent fractions, by dividing the numerator by the denominator, and by memorizing benchmark fractions; convert percents to fractions and vice versa, converting percents to decimals and vice versa by using equivalent fractions and by moving the decimal; calculate percents greater than 100% and less than 1%; find percent of a number using bar graphs and proportions; multiply by a decimal; and compare fractions, decimals, and percents. Students will also be able to add and subtract decimals; multiply whole numbers; multiply and divide decimals by whole numbers and by decimals; apply standard algorithm for dividing whole numbers; multiply fractions by whole numbers and by fractions; simplify before multiplying fractions; multiply mixed numbers and multiply mixed numbers and improper fractions; divide mixed numbers and divide whole numbers and fractions by fractions; compare and contract multiplying decimals and fractions; graph, determine absolute value; compare and order rational numbers; identify rational numbers; locate and graph ordered pairs; label parts of an expression; write verbal phrases as expressions; use exponents, numerical expressions, order of operations, algebraic expressions, and substitution; identify properties; and use distributive property to multiply mentally, rewrite expressions, and to factor expressions, and equivalent expressions. Finally, students will be able to solve equations with substitution; solve and write one step addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division equations; solve equations with decimals, with fractions, with fractions using the lowest common multiple, and with cross products; apply function tables, geometric and arithmetic sequences, function rules, inequalities; use tables and graphs; write equations; represent functions; graph linear functions; solve one-step linear inequalities; identify and classify polygons, parallelograms, triangles, trapezoids; find missing lengths of parallelograms, triangles, and trapezoids, polygons on the coordinate plane, and area of composite figures; calculate volume and surface area with 3-dimensional figures and rectangular and triangular prisms; find missing dimensions of prisms, nets, surface area of rectangular prisms, and surface area of rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, and pyramids, all using nets; choose appropriate measure to calculate center (mean, mode, and median), measures of variation, mean absolute deviation, shape of data, line lots; and read and create histograms and box plots.

** Scope and Sequence**

**Unit 1 – Ratios, Rates, and Proportions**This unit discusses finding greatest common factors using a list of factors and using prime factorization, finding the least common multiple using a list of multiples and using prime factorization. It also covers real-world examples, comparing using multiplication, three ways to write ratios, simplifying ratios, finding unit rates, defining proportions, solving problems using proportional relationships, and divisibility rules.

**Unit 2 – Fractions, Decimals, and Percents**This unit covers changing decimals to fractions by writing what we say, and changing fractions to decimals by finding equivalent fractions, by dividing the numerator by the denominator, and by memorizing benchmark fractions. Also covered are converting percents to fractions and vice versa, converting percents to decimals and vice versa by using equivalent fractions and by moving the decimal. Other topics include percents greater than 100% and less than 1%, finding the percent of a number using bar graphs, proportions, and multiplying by a decimal, solving percent problems, and the connections among fractions, decimals, and percents.

**Unit 3 – Decimal Computation**This unit discusses adding and subtracting decimals, a review of whole number multiplication, multiplying and dividing decimals by whole numbers and by decimals, and the standard algorithm for dividing whole numbers.

**Unit 4 – Fractions**This unit covers multiplying fractions by whole numbers and by fractions, simplifying before multiplying fractions, reviewing mixed numbers and improper fractions, multiplying mixed numbers, dividing whole numbers and fractions by fractions, dividing mixed numbers, and the connection between multiplying decimals and fractions

.**Unit 5 – Integers and the Coordinate Plane**This unit covers real-world situations where graphing is useful, graphing, absolute value, comparing and ordering, defining rational numbers, comparing and ordering rational numbers, and locating and graphing ordered pairs

.**Unit 6 – Expressions**This unit covers the parts of an expression, writing verbal phrases as expressions, using exponents, numerical expressions, order of operations, algebraic expressions, substitution, the identity properties, using the distributive property to multiply mentally, to rewrite expressions, and to factor expressions, and equivalent expressions.

**Unit 7 – Equations**This unit discusses solving equations with substitution, solving and writing one step addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division equations, and solving equations with decimals, with fractions, with fractions using the lowest common multiple, and with cross products.

**Unit 8 – Functions and Inequalities**This unit discusses function tables, geometric and arithmetic sequences, function rules, writing equations representing functions, graphing linear functions, real-world functions (tables and graphs), inequalities, writing and graphing inequalities, and solving one-step linear inequalities.

**Unit 9 – Area**This unit presents a review of polygons and discusses area of parallelograms, triangles, and trapezoids, finding missing lengths of parallelograms, triangles, and trapezoids, polygons on the coordinate plane, and area of composite figures.

**Unit 10 – Volume and Surface Area**This unit discusses three-dimensional figures, volume of rectangular and triangular prisms, finding the missing dimensions of prisms, nets, surface area of rectangular prisms, and surface area of rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, and pyramids, all using nets.

**Unit 11 – Exploring Statistics**This unit covers statistical questions, measures of center (mean, mode, and median), measures of variation, mean absolute deviation, choosing appropriate measures, shape of data, line plots, histograms, and box plots.
